By now most of you are probably familiar with Timothy Snyder, Yale history professor whose book, On Tyranny, came out soon after Trump took office the first time. But if you’re not, his list of 20 actions to take in the face of impending/growing authoritarianism felt like a lifeline as we watched Trump’s horrors like the Muslim ban and caging immigrant children.
I’ve been seeing him on countless news shows again and seeing his list make the rounds of social media again. It’s not the be-all-end-all of what we can do, but it’s a place to start, a common vision to hold, perhaps a metaphor of a human shield.
I encourage you to read the book drawn from the expertise of someone who studied totalitarianism in the 1900s and who can see the parallels to today.
